Individual Placements
Public Clinic
Observe medical procedures and learn medical terminology. Shadow doctors and medical staff and learn about the healthcare system in another country. Volunteers can also accompany clinic staff and paramedics to help provide social, educational and medical outreach in the community. This placement is ideal for those students going into the medical field.
Public or Private School
Assist teachers in English-language classrooms in public schools in rural and semi-urban communities. Volunteers assist with the class or may teach the class on their own. Organize English conversation tables, write lesson plans, grade papers, assist students with homework and help supervise the classroom.
After School Program
Mentor children and teenagers and instruct them on how to prepare and present workshops in areas such as art and theatre, leadership development, peer pressure, sex education and sustainable urban living. Volunteers may also teach classes in English. In addition, volunteers help to maintain the garden, library and other facilities of the organization
Children's Rehabilitation Center
Create a positive environment by providing recreational and educational activities for the children during their free time. Guide new patients through the center and get them acquainted with the facility. Volunteers may also assist in the organization's campaign to spread awareness about disabilities.
Nursery School
Help coordinate various classroom activities, assist the head teacher and lead extracurricular activities at a school for very young children. There are two nursery school options, one for children between 3 months and 2 years old and another for children between 3 months and 4 years old. Volunteers can teach the older children basic English language and plan fun educational activities for them.
Center for Malnourished Infants
This center treats and educates the community about malnutrition and related diseases such as secondary malnutrition, malformations, metabolic disorders and heart disease. The center cares for babies from 0 - 3 years old suffering from the effects of these disorders. Participants are encouraged to play with the children during therapy, assist the center's staff and collaborate with the pediatrician for the children's development through physical therapy.
Hippotherapy Center for Children
This nonprofit's goal is to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities and assist in their integration into society through hippotherapy. Participants will need to have experience with horses since they will aide therapists in teaching children to ride horses. Participants will also help children, many of whom suffer from autism and cerebral palsy, to practice handwriting, create stories and help read the stories out loud.
Microenterprise NGO
Work in a center that is dedicated to delivering theoretical and practical tools to entrepreneurs in order for those they help to start and run successful businesses as a way out of poverty. Participants may be able to assist in the center’s efforts by helping with programs that are currently running or by implementing a new program. Some of the programs currently running are English classes to microentrepreneurs (basic, advanced, tourist or business), computer classes (Word, Excel, basic computation, typing, etc), tutoring about management, business, finance, public relations, cooking classes, graphic design, and more. There are also opportunities to help create a newsletter for the organization.
English Language Institute
ELAP participants will act as Language Partners and assist students with the development of English skills. Work one-on-one with various students at the institute, helping with English homework and class projects, working with their spoken Spanish in order to correct grammar and pronunciation, as well as assisting students with their presentation in English about their experiences in the institution.
All individual placement participants complete an
ELAP Portfolio as part of their program.
